Spinal stenosis occurs when the spaces in your spine (backbone) narrow, which causes pressure on your spinal cord and nerves. About 75% of spinal stenosis cases occur in the low back (lumbar spine). In most cases, the narrowing of the spine associated with stenosis compresses the nerve root, which may lead to pain along the back of your leg.
